It’s Friday night. She puts on her favorite jeans and seasonally inappropriate shirt, and her new shoes that have been dying to get out of their box.

Tonight, she chooses to go sans makeup or perfume. Just a messy bun and moisturizer supporting her healthy glow.

Tonight, she chooses water over wine, paired with a playlist of songs that remind her of simpler times. When life was carefree as it should be. A time when she felt free.

And she dances. The reflection of herself in the mirror, her partner on the dance floor – which is a chair, nothing more.

And she sings. And she’s transported to when she was a child, dancing and singing freely with lyrics she didn’t quite understand but could feel in her soul…much too grown for her to be singing, but she sang them anyway.

And she dances. And she remembers the nights of her teenage years in smoky bars where a fake ID granted her overly made-up face access to grinding adults and reggaetón. Inappropriately and awkwardly, she danced anyway.

And she sings and dances like she had with her single girlfriends in her twenties, in 80’s and 90’s themed rooms where the songs were all favorites and written solely to be sung out loud. The more drinks flowed, the more her hips swayed and the closer her girlfriends’ bodies got to hers. ‘Til early morning, she danced and sang any worries away.

And she dances and sings. And she dances and sings…

And when she looks around, she as a child

And she as a teenager

And she as a twenty-something

And even she as future versions of herself – unknown yet familiar, of fuller figure, of wiser eyes, of silver hair

…have all joined her and her reflection on the dance floor that Friday night, to dance with the She, she is today. Together, they celebrate the version of herself that finds freedom alone in her room on a Friday night, dancing as if everyone is watching and a show is what they’ve come to see.

She dances in gratitude and love with them for the memories they bring in this time and space, all good and bad and in-between because those are the moments that have led her to tonight. Singing all of the words and mostly off-key to songs with hearts indicated on her playlist. On a natural-high, fueled by just the intention to simply be and have a good time.

They dance and sing together, as if time itself does not exist.

And once again life is carefree as it should be, and in this moment, she is free.
