Who is a Visionary?

The dictionary definition is:
vi·sion·ar·y
/ˈviZHəˌnerē/
noun
Person with original ideas about what the future will or could be like.
“he is a visionary keen on policy-making”

I admit, I had a hard time feeling inspired about writing a Visionary article this month. I procrastinated and got in my head about it.

I asked myself what does it mean to be a Visionary? Who are visionaries and what is the difference between someone who IS one and who ISN’T one? Who holds the magical key that initiates someone on this path?

And then it came to me.  Anyone with a goal or a dream of a future different from your current reality, is a visionary. Since it’s your future you’re creating, it is an ‘original idea’ because each of us is unique.

In a nutshell, I believe that if you dream, either asleep or waking, you have the makings of a visionary. So that means that we are ALL visionaries. Whether you choose to identify as one or not, or fully live this path, is your choice.

So, what is the process of  becoming a visionary, then? How does one decide if this is the identity they choose or the path they wish to take?

I believe it comes down to desiring more or better and not just settling for the status quo. It’s a fire inside that drives someone to inspire others, to spark a movement, to shake things up, or to ease the suffering and pain in others through art, media, written word, protests, pilgrimages, education, music and the list goes on and on.

Visionaries can be vocal public figures, or they can be quietly living their life.

Visionaries see beyond the realities in front of them and dream into a better future. They are leaders, teachers, guides, artists, musicians, film makers, inventors, actors, poets, politicians.

They are mothers and fathers who just want to make the world a better place for their children. Who envision and desire more happiness, wealth  and ease – pave a smoother road for their kids than they had.

They are refugees willing to risk their lives crossing dangerous borders or oceans to find a better life for their families.

Visionaries have an innate hunger and passion for learning and growing. They are seekers of knowledge, new ways, innovative strategies; always pushing against any real or perceived barrier.

If you’re struggling to get in touch with your inner visionary, think back to when you were a child. ALL CHILDREN ARE VISIONARIES! Think about it: children live in their imagination and dreams. Their innocence and connection to the Divine keep them in a state of innocence and creativity. They can lose themselves in a fantasy and spend hours creating stories and make-believe situations of magic and mystery.

It doesn’t matter how big or small your vision is. Whether it’s just about a better life for you and your family, or something big like finding a cure for cancer.

The important thing is to dream into a better future.

What do you envision for your life or the world?
