Ur Ancestors Ate Meat

“Today we can go to the grocery store or even an international market and purchase food from different region which is wonderful to try different foods from different areas and expand your taste buds, however, YOUR ANCESTORS DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THAT FOOD. They ate what was local to their area, they were hunters and gathers. We are not that anymore.”

With the New Age health craze that has happened in the last couple of years, of how our ancestors, before coming to America or being colonized didn’t eat meat. We sometimes forget that our ancestors even after being colonized or enslaved was still able to tap into their spirituality while still being carnivorous. They were still powerful forces while eating soul food. They was smart without modern technology. So, what has changed in the last century?

The processing of meat and food that we eat now, of course. Growing up I remember my Grandfather not drinking milk due to him getting sick from drinking unpasteurized milk as a child. Our ancestors didn’t have to go to a grocery store most of the items they consume was of local origin. I know for me growing up on the coast, my Grandfather and father was a commercial fisherman. We ate a lot of seafood and only went to the grocery store to purchase other meats and items that we could not ourselves produce. The government now regulate everything that we consume. Unless you live on a farm with all the crops and cattle you consume plus make every item you use to cook with, your only option is to go to a grocery store.

Our ancestors needed the extra protein because most of them either worked on a farm or some other high energy job that required, they consumed meat. Now of course, we are more sedentary than we were ever 50 years ago, we don’t need as much protein, but we still need the nutrients it provides, especially iron. Many former vegans, including myself, has noted less energy and feeling/being sick while being purely vegan. After going back to meat for whatever reason, we felt better, we had more energy, and our body was happy.

We talk of honoring & connecting with our ancestors BUT not eating food they consumed, in my belief disconnect you from them a little. I, myself do not eat pork due to it being unhealthy and limit my beef consumption, I do eat poultry and seafood. Today we can go to the grocery store or even an international market and purchase food from different region which is wonderful to try different foods from different areas and expand your taste buds, however, YOUR ANCESTORS DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THAT FOOD. They ate what was local to their area, they were hunters and gathers. We are not that anymore.

Luckily, there are healthier options of meat:

  1. A co-op or farmers’ market; You will be able to find locally raised cuts of meat. Minimum processing, fresher cuts of meat.
  2. Organic/grass fed animals
  3. Free range chickens
  4. No hormones
  5. Humanely Slaughtered animals

If you are what you eat at least try to find a cut of meat that was happy and raised in a clean and safe environment before being slaughtered. I WILL pay the extra price for “healthier” options of meats due to the chemicals and hormones that they add. I also, however, still eat healthy i.e., fruits, vegetables, and limiting sugary & fried items. That in my belief is the most important thing to do instead of going to the extremes of eliminating meat all together. I also do regular cleanses, either a juice cleanse or a duck flower detox, which I believe is also important.
